MATERIALITY 101: RECLAIMED WOOD
Our shop started out by making furniture with reclaimed wood, architectural salvage and other materials destined for the landfill. Sourcing the finest lumber based on both aesthetics and strength is one of the best parts about creating custom furniture.
The hunt for the best wood is always a top priority, so we also work closely with suppliers who provide domestically sourced wood from sustainably harvested forests. This is furniture-grade lumber which is specifically kiln-dried to eliminate shrinking and warping. Far from being run-of-the mill, this wood is one-of-a kind. Working through piles of timber, our partners handpick boards with a high level of character and specifically set aside any unique grain patterns for Union Wood Co.
When employed in the right design, the well-chosen material becomes even more meaningful. This is part of a shift to valuing objects that are high quality, local and sustainable. The wood - and other natural materials - helps us connect to physical things on a deeper level, and we recognize that less is more.
